Cleanse in Thailand

On a trip to India earlier this year, I think I picked up some sort of intestinal parasite.

This is nothing out of the ordinary for many people who visit the country.

Luckily, it wasn’t anything serious, but I have noticed that my digestion for the last 6 months has not been great (and don’t worry, I will spare you the details).

A course of anti-biotics actually made the problem worse and so I opted to go for a 3 cleanse ta a resort called Health Oasis on Koh Samui.

The last time I did any sort of cleansing was about 20 years ago when I did a 7 day cleanse on Samui at another resort which is now closed.

At the time I weighed about 60KGs and after one week of eating nothing, my weight plummeted to about 54KGs.

I remember feeling pleased that I had lost weight around my mid-drift, but when I got home my mother said I looked ill. Now when I look back on those photos, I really did look too skinny and I didn’t want to end up looking like that again.

So this time I opted for just a 3 day cleanse instead.

When I arrived at Health Oasis, I was greeted by very friendly staff and an Australian Nutritionist called Kate. She talked me through the cleanse and informed me that I would be taking bentonite clay in some diluted juices to help clear toxins from the colon. I was also allowed to drink a vegetable broth which was literally lightly flavoured water which contained essential vitamins and minerals but did not contain any food.

Other than that, I ate nothing for 3 days.

Now, this may sound difficult, but actually, it wasn’t. There were other people there who were on a 21 day cleanse, so 3 days was very easy in comparison.

The atmosphere was relaxed there and the guests, mostly there on their own, were very friendly and approachable. It is almost as though you are all on a mission together and as a result, everyone is very open, supportive and kind.

Some people were there to lose weight, others in the hope that it would ease the symptoms of chronic illness, such as fatigue, headaches, skin disorders etc. It may surprise you to learn that many people I spoke to did notice an improvement of such symptoms just by fasting.

As for those people who went to lose weight, the results were quite outstanding. You could really see how much better, slimmer and healthier they looked in such a short period of time.

You may think that a cleanse would be difficult, but to be honest, it is quite easy as you are kept quite busy throughout the day taking supplements.

The day would begin at 8 am with bentonite clay and juice, followed by various nutrient supplements which you would spray under your tongue a couple of hours later. This cycle of juices and supplement sprays continued every 2-3 hours or so up until 8 pm.

On the third day of the cleanse I also had 2 colonics, one in the morning and one in the evening and again on the morning of the 4th day before I ate.

Colonics are a debatable issue, some people are for them, some against. Personally, I think they are very good for cleaning out the colon and providing you are given probiotics to restore intestinal flora afterwards (which you are supplied with at Health Oasis), I think they are very important to restore gut health.

How did I feel after a 3 day cleanse?

Absolutely fantastic. My digestive issues disappeared and I feel as though it has been restored back to normal. I even lost a bit of belly fat – always an added bonus.

In addition to the cleanse, Health Oasis also have a team of highly skilled and well-trained massage therapists there who you can book in with throughout the day. I would recommend booking in with the therapists at the resort because you can never know the quality of massage you will receive in local shops outside. Health Oasis offers a variety of treatments that include Thai, Deep Tissue and Abdominal Massage. There are also morning yoga classes and evening meditation sessions every day with qualified and experienced local instructors.

The resort itself is 3/4 star. No thrills, but clean rooms locater on a very nice beach with stunning views. The area around the resort is quiet compared to the rest of Samui, but Fisherman’s Village, an excellent street for shopping is a 20-minute taxi drive away and for further entertainment is the beach town Chawengabout about 30 minutes away.

My overall impression of Health Oasis was very positive and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to de-tox properly in a safe and friendly environment.

Don’t expect a 5-star resort, but expect 5-star service. For what you get, the prices here are extremely good and well worth the investment if you genuinely want to detox or lose weight.

I would thoroughly recommend a cleanse to anyone who has chronic illness, suffers from fatigue, has digestive problems or wants to kick start a new health regime.

I will definitely be returning to Health Aasis on a regular basis.
